Lani Ka’ahumanu – writer and activist for bisexual and feminist rights – has been a leader for the bisexual rights movement in the US since 1980. She fought for bisexual rights within the LGBTQ+ community and in broader society.
She has been fighting against biphobia since she came out in 1980. While white-passing, Lani’s mother was of Native American and Japanese descent. Ka’ahumanu saw discrimination against her mother and her sister growing up. She used this eye witnessing of racial bias in her early life to further push her advocacy.
